Stephen A. Smith has been a longtime figure in sports media, particularly surrounding the NBA, where he covered the league for over 30 years. He also played a key role in shaping the debate show format that became a staple on television, most notably with ESPN’s “First Take.”
Smith has been with ESPN since March 2003. On Wednesday, during the latest episode of “First Take,” he reacted to major personal news: he was officially named one of 14 inductees into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame.
“It’s always great to be recognized for hard work. I know one thing — I work hard. And I know that I’ve been blessed and fortunate to be with this network and work with the people I’ve worked with,” Smith said.
“First Take this month marked the 14th consecutive year that we’ve been number one. Obviously, there are a whole bunch of people who contribute to the show—great bosses, great colleagues. I love all of y’all. I don’t consider this award for me; I consider this award for us.”
Smith began his career working for local publications, gradually building himself into one of the most successful — and polarizing — figures in sports media. With the evolution of the industry, that combination of success and controversy has worked in his favor.
He added a second message of thanks on social media after the show ended, expressing gratitude to everyone who has helped him along the way.
“This could not have happened without all the wonderful colleagues I’ve worked with over the years — too many folks to name here. Thanks to everyone who has helped me along this journey, which is nowhere near finished, by the way,” Smith posted. “I appreciate everyone… from the bottom of my heart. THANK YOU, SINCERELY!”
Fans reacted with mixed emotions to the news, reflecting both his supporters and, as some call them, his “haters.”
“The more he’s hated, the more he achieves. Maybe y’all need to stop hating and you’ll get him off the air,” one fan said.
Someone else added, “I guess yelling and screaming is a characteristic to get in.”
“Well deserved. Congratulations,” another wrote.
“Well earned,” a fan shared.
One more commented, “Congrats Stephen, well deserved. You are a very intelligent gentleman.”
