Woman Reveals Why She’s ‘Never Questioning’ Her Miniature Dachshund Again

Sometimes, we forget just how powerful our dogs’ senses really are—but one woman was recently left stunned by her miniature dachshund’s scent‑tracking skills.

In a TikTok video that has now racked up over 1.1 million views, text layered over the clip reads: “So basically I’m never questioning my dog ever again.”

The April 3 footage, posted by Riley (@rileylundin), shows her lifting up her dachshund to sniff along shelves packed with various items. After scanning each level, the dog suddenly fixates on a spot on the top shelf and starts making a fuss. When Riley reaches up, she pulls down his purple toy, her jaw dropping in shock.

The moment struck a chord with dog lovers, many of whom know just how sharp a canine’s sense of smell can be. The American Kennel Club says dog noses are at least 100,000 times more sensitive than human noses. As the AKC puts it, smelling could easily be considered a pup’s “superpower.”

And science backs that up. Dogs can detect substances in quantities as tiny as one-billionth of a teaspoon, a skill that makes them indispensable to arson investigators, police, and the military for locating accelerants, drugs, bombs, and explosives. Canines are also crucial in search‑and‑rescue missions, able to track missing people by scent alone.

Their abilities extend far beyond public safety. Archaeologists rely on dogs to locate human remains, and medical researchers have trained canines to detect cancers—including ovarian, prostate, lung cancer, and melanoma—as well as malaria and Parkinson’s disease. Medical Detection Dogs experts say canines can identify disease odors diluted to the equivalent of a teaspoon of sugar in two Olympic‑size swimming pools.

While dachshunds may be small and famously adorable, the AKC states were “bred to be an independent hunter of dangerous prey,” relying not on their appearance but on their scenting ability, barking, and chasing instincts.

The viral clip prompted a flood of comments from dog owners who have had similar experiences.

One user wrote: “I had two chicken nuggets from mc Donald’s in my pocket to give them to my dog later. I forgot about them until I saw him sleeping next to my jacket waiting.”

Another shared: “I was looking for [my dog’s] harness as I threw it when I was in a rush and it fell behind some random boxes…. She knew exactly where it was. She always knows before someone rings the doorbell.”

A third added: “My beagle found my mail key I lost for [two] days deep in my couch. It was the craziest thing.”

A fourth user said their dog does the same thing, adding: “It’s wild.”

For Riley, the viral moment seems to have settled one thing: her dachshund’s nose knows best—and she won’t be doubting it again anytime soon.
