According to the Khmer Times , Cambodia has just been ranked by US News & World Report as the world's leading country in terms of natural environment in 2026.

This global ranking is based on criteria including environmental governance, air quality, natural resource management, and biodiversity conservation, and considers how countries balance economic development with environmental sustainability.

Cambodian Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth stated that this recognition is a great achievement for the country and its people.

"This is a great honor for Cambodia and its people in the field of environment and natural resources on an international scale," he stated.

Cambodia currently manages 73 nature reserves with a total area of over 7 million hectares, accounting for approximately 41% of the country's land area.

Authorities say these protected areas play a crucial role in preserving forests, protecting wildlife habitats, and maintaining biodiversity through strict conservation and law enforcement measures.

As part of a larger environmental effort, Cambodia has accelerated reforestation programs through nationwide tree-planting campaigns.

The Ministry of Environment affirmed that it has promoted the cultivation and distribution of at least one million saplings to the people, aiming to restore forests and expand green cover nationwide.

According to the agency, the program also contributes to improving climate change adaptation, supporting the local community economy, and aligns with Cambodia's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
